Drive up to Whidbey Island, one of the most accessible and scenic island destinations in the Pacific Northwest. The island sits just north of Seattle, and is a short trip via bridge or ferry. Offering a different experience with each season, the island provides locally inspired shops and restaurants, a variety of dynamic experiences, recreational activities, and beach combing. Lodging options range from nationally renowned hotels with farm to table dining, to secret spots ideal for a quiet retreat.
In addition to being a wonderful weekend destination, Whidbey Island is also a great for those who value sustainable tourism and taking care of the environment. Whidbey is currently working to partake in what is called “transformational travel,” which inspires visitors to leave places in a better condition than how they found them. Transformational travel encourages a light environmental footprint, as well as storytelling around the local heritage and culture.
Winter is an ideal time for locals to visit the island, as the ferry lines are shorter, the beaches are quieter, and it’s easier to snag a reservation at some of the most incredible restaurants in the area, including The Orchard Kitchen and Savory. There are also a variety of events taking place this season, including but not limited to:
- Red Wine & Chocolate is February 12-13 and 19-20. The Whidbey Island Wine and Spirits Trail offers customized tasting opportunities that pair with decadent chocolate desserts.
- Langley Mystery Weekend is February 26-27, invites visitors to crack a case as the whole town becomes the scene for a mystery for amateurs to solve. When the mystery is solved, prizes are awarded to those who have entered and guessed correctly. Prizes range from overnight stays to gift certificates to local stores and restaurants.
- Musselfest, from March 5-6, is an annual celebration of the delicious and award winning mussels grown in Coupeville by Penn Cove Shellfish. Hop a boat tour to the Penn Cove seafood rafts, which is the only time they open to the public all year! Enjoy hotly contested chowder tasting tour with recipes, live music, and more.
